No trees grow on Lewis, the wind-swept, wave-lashed Northern tip of the Western Isles, where for three years there had been famine. The old and the weak were already dying when a long-lost relative of the MacLeod clan turned up at their annual ceilidh with news that good land was available for the asking in Canada.  The clan chief had no other choice: he pledged there and then that he'd get them to the 'promised land' one way or another, dead or alive.

Those that survived the passage from Stornoway arrived to find the new country in the grip of a hard winter – a hard Canadian winter, that is.  Hauling their dead after them encased in coffins of ice, they pressed on, facing unimaginable hardship on the way, and when eventually they reached their destination, the first thing they did was to build a stone church - the very building in which Mike Burns told this story for the first time.

When Mike Burns came to St Donat’s Storytelling festival a few years ago, his account of this epic journey held the audience completely spellbound; it's difficult to say exactly what it was that was so special about hearing his performance except that it was pure storytelling - a voice echoing down through time, piloting us throughout the perilous crossing to safe refuge.  The way the story resonated was unforgettable; we could feel the realisation dawning that when those islanders on Lewis left our shores, they took something of us along with them.

So Camden Ceilidh Storytelling is thrilled to announce that Mike is coming to England again, giving us the chance to 'hear the tale anew'.

Through the generosity of  Fr Tom Deidun at St Etheldreda's Church, the performance will be held in the Crypt of that church (see St Etheldreda's tab to find out more about this medieval spiritual sanctuary).

Please note that St Etheldreda's is distinct from St Ethelburga, where storytelling events also take place.  For directions to St Etheldreda's click here, or on the map tab, and please don’t turn up at the wrong church!
